Wednesday February 19th, 2020: This Week on Broadway
NYC’s Broadway Week (which is really a fortnight) has finally ended and Broadway’s gross ticket sales are back up to the weekly standard of around $30 million. This week's grosses, attendance and average ticket price numbers were all up compared to those of the previous week. Broadway grosses saw an increase of 15.5% making the total for this week $31,152,533. This week's attendance was up 4.5% from last week making the total attendance 250,646 butts-in-seats. Average ticket prices were up 10.4% making the total average ticket price this week $124.29.
This week's uptick means the dip in the previous week's Broadway tickets sales was due to NYC Broadway Week, which offered Broadway tickets at 2 for the price of 1. Which is effectively a race to the bottom in economic terms. The NYC and Company’s twice annual promotion ran from January 21, 2020 and went all the through February 9, 2020.
Most Broadway Shows See Increase in Sales
Almost all of the shows running on Broadway saw an increase in sales this week. The only show this week that did not see an increase was surprisingly Hamilton. Hamilton’s sales sat at $2,553,721, down over 5.1% from the previous week. Total attendance was relatively the same at 10,740 people seeing the show. The average ticket price for this show for this week was $237.78, which was down about 5% from last week's average ticket price which was $250.34. Hamilton’s only statistical change this week was the drop in the average ticket price, making it the only reason for the dip this week.
Girl From the North Country opened two weeks back and its ticket sales nearly doubled for its second week in-previews.
Gross ticket sales were $619,273.60. The average ticket was $92.72 and attendance was 6,679 which was 83.6% of the Belasco theatre's total seats, so many seats are going unsold.
American Utopia Breaks Records on Broadway
David Byrne’s American Utopia closed this week on strong numbers and the show broke all sorts of records for the newly-minted Hudson theatre. Total gross ticket sales since American Utopia opened was $20,258,314, which is well over the $4 million initial investment from the show's producers. Total gross ticket sales were $1,431,543 beating the predicted gross potential by over 55%. Total attendance was 6,727 people and the average ticket was $212.81 for its final week.
Six the musical opened in-previews this week at the Brooks Atkinson theatre and its gross ticket sales were perfect for the name of the show, coming in at a spooky $666,019. The irony of the weeks grossing numbers did not go unnoticed leading pundits to believe that the sales for the week of previews was pre-planned by the shows producers, but this is just weird. The average ticket price for this show was $128.20. Total attendance was 5,195 people, which was 101.17% of the theatre’s total capacity, leading to pundits predicting a successful run with a quick return on investment.
