The prequel of The Wizard of Oz where Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Based on the 1995 original novel by Gregory Maguire.
What's Wicked Like?
Wicked is a new take on the classic story of The Wizard of Oz, told from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. Elphaba just happens to have green-colored skin but she wasn’t always wicked.
This musical tells how she came to be considered the villain whom Dorothy would later encounter - but this show is Elphaba’s story, not Dorothy’s. The show is aesthetically mindboggling, and the Tony-nominated score will leave you humming the songs for weeks to come.
Consistently a favorite for theatregoers, this epic musical plays in the enormous Gershwin Theatre. This story has something for everyone with themes of love, politics and fall from grace, but especially strong are the themes of acceptance and redemption.
Is Wicked Good for Kids?
Despite some dark undertones, Wicked is a show that is intended for children. Its source material is the children’s favorite The Wizard of Oz. However, the show may be inappropriate for children under the age of 8, as there are frightening elements to Wicked, such as flying monkeys and references to death and violence.

Wicked on Broadway Background
The story chronicles Elphaba, a kind-hearted and magically talented young woman with green skin, who happens to become known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
The tale begins with her days at the Shiz University, where she became rivals and then friends with Glinda the Good. When she realizes that The Wizard of Oz is actually a cause of evil, robbing the animals of their ability to speak, this promising student soon becomes the leader of the opposition to The Wizard of Oz.
Eventually, it becomes clear how this underbelly to the famous Wizard of Oz story forms the backdrop for Dorothy’s journey that we all know so well.
Long before Dorothy joins the fray, the Land of Oz has two other girls, one with emerald-green skin and the other a beautiful blonde. These two unlikely friends go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. This Broadway show is spellbinding and is adored by fans the world over even though critics railed against it.
The music and lyrics to the show are written by Stephen Schwartz and the book is by Winnie Holzman.
