Tuesday February 25th, 2020: This Week on Broadway
Even though this week started with Presidents day and an extended holiday weekend, Broadway gross ticket sales slightly dipped from the previous week. Out of the 26 Broadway shows currently performing, 17 of them (65%) had decreasing ticket sales and the other nine Broadway shows were barely in the black for the week. Even with all the sales slips this week, Broadway grosses were still moderate at $29,195,910 in total sales, which is down only 6.7% from the previous week and down 2.2% from the previous year.
Attendance Is Slightly Up While Average Ticket Prices Drop
Attendance was up this week when compared to last week by just 308 people, a 0.12% increase to 250,954 Broadway tickets sold for the week. With grosses being down and attendance staying on track this week, this only left the average Broadway ticket price to be the problematic element in the Broadway grosses equation. The average Broadway ticket price for the week was $116.34 per ticket, which is down $7.95 from the previous week’s ticket price at $124.29 per ticket.
The average Broadway ticket price dropped by 6.4% and the overall Broadway grosses percentage slipped for the week by 6.7%, but the same amount of people still went to see shows, so if ticket prices had not dropped, the overall sales gross would have likely remained the same.
Six Performs Previews For Second Week
The Broadway musical Six performed in-previews for its second week and its gross ticket sales were up an outstanding 50% from the opening week. The show crossed the one million dollar mark for the week with $1,000,854.60 for this week’s sales. Total attendance for Six was 8,222 people, which was over the theatre’s capacity by eight tickets. The average ticket to the show dropped by $6.47 this week to $121.73 per ticket. The average ticket price decline did not end up impacting their Broadway sales figures when compared to last week, because the show only performed five shows last week and eight shows this week, which is 60% more performances.
The Lion King Ticket Sales Up
The Lion King had a great week when compared to the rest of the shows performing on Broadway this week. Gross ticket sales for the show were up over 10% from the previous week to a strong $1,841,117. Attendance was up to 96.54% of the Minskoff theatre’s seat capacity for the week, which is between 3% to 4% greater than what the average attendance is at the show normally.
The rise in show attendance can be explained by the extended weekend that schools and workplaces had with Presidents day falling on Monday, February 17th this past week. The average ticket price for the show also rose this week to $140.55 from $130.91 per ticket the previous week, which is a significant 7.4% ticket price increase.
#MeToo Movement Hits West Side Story
The third Broadway revival of West Side Story had its red-carpet opening at the Broadway theatre on Thursday February 20th this week. The show finally opened after multiple medical related delays, which kept reviewers and critics in suspense while the show was still in-previews. The show’s reviews were positive, but the ‘#MeToo’ protesters who were lining up outside the theatre everyday may have impacted the show’s opening week ticket sales. The protesters have reportedly blocked the theatre’s entrance before each performance making audience members feel uneasy about seeing the show.
Gross ticket sales for this West Side Story Broadway revival were down nearly 5% when compared to the show’s previous weeks in-previews. Opening weeks gross ticket sales for the show were an unimpressive, $1,454,228.54. This show has been grossing in the 1.5 to 1.8 million dollar range during the previous week’s performances and was expected to do about the same or better for its opening week.
No Drop in Attendance Despite Scandals
Attendance for the show was the same as every other week, at 13,920 butts-in-seats, which is 100% of the theatre’s total capacity. The average ticket price was the main financial issue for the show as the price did drop more than $5.00 from the previous week to a very ordinary Broadway show ticket price of $104.47 per ticket. Average ticket prices for this revival have been over $129 per ticket in the past and producers are hoping to get to that price or higher again in the future, but fans and critics are sceptical that it will happen.
