Since its premiere in 1879, Henrik Ibsen’s masterwork A Doll’s House has been performed on Broadway 13 times, the most recent of which took place in 1997. Lucas Hnath’s new play A Doll’s House, Part 2 is the sequel to that classic drama, telling the story of what happens after Nora Helmer slams the door and leaves her husband in the final moments of the original work. This play probes the questions of why Nora has decided to return, and what her return means for those whom she has left behind.

What's A Doll's House, Part 2 Like?

In addition to an intriguing premise and an extremely talented creative team, A Doll’s House, Part 2 boasts a superb cast. The performers include Laurie Metcalf (Misery, The Other Place, Brighton Beach Memoirs, the HBO series “Getting On”), Chris Cooper (Of the Fields, Lately, the film Adaptation), Jayne Houdyshell (Tony Award winner for The Humans; Fish in the Dark, Dead Accounts, Follies), and Condola Rashad (Romeo and Juliet, The Trip to Bountiful, Stick Fly, the Showtime series “Billions”). After Nora famously leaves her husband at the end of Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, audiences have been left wondering for over a century what will become of her family. In A Doll’s House, Part 2, many years have passed and Nora returns to knock on the door that she once slammed for good. This is an exciting collaboration between a visionary playwright, freethinking director, and highly talented cast.

A Doll's House, Part 2 on Broadway Background

Hnath is an up-and-coming playwright who is making his Broadway debut with this play; his previous works include Red Speedo, Isaac’s Eye, The Christians, Hillary and Clinton, Death Tax, and A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney. Based on the strength of the script alone, mega producer Scott Rudin decided to develop the play for Broadway; it is unusual for a new play by a lesser known writer to go straight to Broadway without an Off-Broadway or regional tryout. At the same time as the Broadway premiere, the show is also playing at the South Coast Repertory in Southern California. On Broadway, the play is directed by Sam Gold, another young creative who has sprung onto the theatre scene in recent years; his past Broadway directing credits include Fun Home (Tony Award winner for Best Musical and Best Director), as well as The Glass Menagerie, The Real Thing, and The Realistic Joneses.
