“Airline Highway” refers to the street in New Orleans that was once glamorous but is now rundown. These friends are a motley bunch, ranging from strippers to philosophers, and they have gathered to celebrate a friend of theirs before she passes: the burlesque performer Miss Ruby. An ode to outcasts, this play is energetic and touching, and the dialogue is rich and fast-paced.

Is Airline Highway Good for Kids?

Airline Highway on Broadway Background

Following a pre-Broadway run at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, Airline Highway is now in New York at the Manhattan Theater Club’s Broadway venue, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. It is a play by Lisa D’Amour, whose previous play Detroit was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and her play Nita and Zita won an Obie Award.

The group is made up of a diverse assembly of individuals trying to cope with their socioeconomic class, and the hardships that come along with it. The show is directed by Joe Mantello, who is well known for his direction of such plays as The Last Ship, Casa Valentina, I’ll Eat You Last: A Conversation with Sue Mengers, The Other Place, and Other Desert Cities. This play marks the first in two years produced on Broadway by Manhattan Theater Club that was written by a woman, which had created substantial controversy.
