When the film Amélie was released in 2001, it became the highest-grossing French film in the United States, a title that it still holds. The whimsical romantic story takes place in the Montmartre area of Paris, focusing on a young waitress who decides to take it into her hands to act as a secret wish fulfiller for others.

What's Amelie Like?

Not only is Amélie a breathtakingly refreshing and exuberant story, but this production stars a hot new performer who has been dazzling audiences as a fresh new talent. In the title role of Amélie is Phillipa Soo, who recently received a Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton. Prior to this spotlight outing, Soo debuted the role of Natasha Rostova in the original Off-Off-Broadway Ars Nova production of Natasha, Pierre, and the Comet of 1812, and then followed that production to its Off-Broadway run at the Kazino pop-up venue. While that show is set to play Broadway in fall 2016, Soo will be focusing her talents on Amélie. In addition, she will play a voice part in the upcoming Disney film Moana, which has music written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Furthermore, Soo has been seen on the NBC television show “Smash,” in the role of Lexi.

Is Amelie Good for Kids?

The show is most appropriate for children over the age of 10. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Amelie on Broadway Background

The film, directed by Jean-Paul Jeunet and starred Audrey Tautou, was nominated for five Academy Awards and won four César Awards (the French equivalent), including Best Film and Best Director. Several years ago, development began on a stage adaptation of the material, with a book by Craig Lucas (from Prelude to a Kiss, An American in Paris, King Kong, The Light in the Piazza), music by Dan Messé (Twelfth Night, the band “Hem”), and lyrics co-written by Nathan Tysen (Tuck Everlasting). The show premiered last summer and fall at Berkeley Reperatory Theatre, directed by Pam MacKinnon (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Clybourne Park, A Delicate Balance). MacKinnon returns to direct the Broadway production and the choreography is by Sam Pinkleton. The show comes to Broadway following a Los Angeles run from December 14, 2016 to January 16, 2017 at the Ahmanson Theatre. With such a bright young star in the lead role, Amélie is well poised to be as astonishing on the stage as it is on film.
