The story of American Psycho is dark and grim, but hilarious and insightful at the same time. It centers on the story of Patrick Bateman who is a devastatingly gorgeous and successful young man on Wall Street. However, he also has a dark side: including brutal rape and murder of the young women and other people he meets along his path to self-delusion and destruction.

What's American Psycho Like?

American Psycho is a dark and controversial tale, which may not be for every taste or palette. Still, it is sure to be exciting and well-crafted with an excellent creative team at its helm. As a Broadway musical, the story is more biting, but also hilarious. It is a critique of the yuppie society of narcissism which is all too prevalent in our modern culture, but it takes it to the next level, allowing us to view this perspective through the eyes of a bonafide psychopath. Nevertheless, the beauty of Patrick Bateman is that he does not really know he is a psychopath, and the clear eyed and calm view he gives to the most troubling of circumstances is thought provoking to say the least. This show is not as gory as the book, but it is certainly more disturbing.

American Psycho on Broadway Background

American Psycho was originally conceived as a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991. In 2000, it was made into a well received and widely released film adaptation starring Christian Bale. The original novel and the film are considered classics of literary satire and a dystopian look at the disintegration of morality in the modern age. This musical adaptation has a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (co book writer of Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark) and music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening). In December 2013, the musical had a successful run at the Off West End Almeida Theatre in London, directed by Rupert Goold. Goold also directs this Broadway production, which has choreography by Lynne Page (A Little Night Music, La Cage aux Folles). The producers David Johnson, Jesse Singer, Jeffrey Richard and Jerry Frankel have decided to bring this show to Broadway; rehearsals began February 2016, just in time to hit the heart of the spring season for Tony consideration.
