What's Birthday Candles Like?
Birthday Candles is a psychoanalytical play that follows protagonist Ernestine Ashworth, a 17 year old girl who has fallen into a deep depression over her self-perceived insignificance in the universe.
Before she can process the emotions she is feeling, a year goes by in what feels like a blink of an eye. Suddenly years start racing by and Ernestine sees she is not accomplishing, what she wanted out of life. While reflecting on the life she lived, Ernestine attempts to finally answer the question of what it means to live.
Is Birthday Candles Good for Kids?
This show focuses on heavy themes of depression and thus may not be suitable for children under the age of 12
Birthday Candles on Broadway Background
Birthday Candles is a play written by Noah Haidle, a playwright best known for his numerous off-broadway productions, including the likes of Smokefall, Saturn Returns and Mr Marmalade. Birthday Candles was able to secure Emmy-Award winning actress Debra Messing to play the lead role.
A Return to Stage for Messing and a Directing Debut for Benesch
Messing made her long-awaited return to the Broadway stage in this show, after a six year stage hiatus. The Will and Grace star plays the lead role of Ernestine Ashworth, a birthday girl who feels lost and unimportant in the grand scheme of the universe.
The show features the directing debut of Broadway actress, Vivienne Benesch, who made her acting debut in the 2004 production of After the Fall. After several off-Broadway stints, Benesch has begun to try her hand at directing and take a behind-the-scenes approach to theatre.
