Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a new musical based off the 1964 children’s book by Roald Dahl, which has also been adapted into several films among other media. The story is about a poor child Charlie Bucket who finds a winning ticket to go to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Thus begins a fantastical tale in which the lucky children fall one by one to the mysterious pitfalls of the magical factory. At the end, only Charlie remains, and gets to ride in a great glass elevator.

What's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Like?

In this production, the role of Willy Wonka is played by Christian Borle, who has won two Tony Awards for his performances in Peter and the Starcatcher as well as Something Rotten! and the television show “Smash.” Furthermore, Borle steps off of Something Rotten! and into a brief run in a Lincoln Center production of Falsettos, in the role of Marvin. This show will be in good hands; a timeless classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the story of a young boy named Charlie Bucket, who finds a golden ticket inside a chocolate bar, which leads him to an adventure inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

Is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Good for Kids?

The show is appropriate for a family audience, and is most suitable for children aged 6 and up. Children under the age of 4 will not be permitted in the theatre.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway Background

The musical has a book by David Greig, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. That songwriting duo was also behind the musicals Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, as well as the television show “Smash.” For the Broadway production, the show has taken on a new director since the London incarnation: Jack O’Brien, whose recent directorial credits include It’s Only a Play, Dead Accounts, Macbeth, The Nance and Catch Me If You Can.

The most well-known adaptations are the 1971 film, which was directed by Mel Stuart and starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and the 2005 film, which was directed by Tim Burton and starred Johnny Depp. The musical version premiered in London’s West End, where it has been playing since May 2013 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane

What makes the name of the show a bit complicated is that the original book was named Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the 2005 movie was back to the original book name of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
