What's For Colored Girls Like?

The show incorporates poetry, song and dance to tell the stories of seven women who are identified only by the hues of the dresses that they wear. The show is a depiction of black women struggling to claim their own voices in a society that had either ignored or actively silenced them.

In For Colored Girls, the authors free-form text is neither linear, nor literal in its depiction of the struggle of these misused and abused black women. These Women will share their stories of having left a dangerous place for a safer one and what it means to them. They use poetry and movement to purge themselves of the pain, ultimately drawing lessons and support from one another.

For Colored Girls on Broadway Background

Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem play originally premiered at the Booth Theatre in September 1976 and returns to Broadway for the first time in nearly 50 years. The show is properly named as For Colored Girls who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf. This production is directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown.

This Broadway production is fully reimagined and is substantially different from Leah C. Gardiner’s revival of Shange’s choreopoem which performed at the Public Theater in 2019. Shange was an inspiration force and her death in 2018 prompted a renewed interest in her work, with plans that year to bring the work back to Broadway, that never came to fruition. This show was the inspiration for the 2021 Broadway show, Thoughts of a Colored Man.

2008 Failed Broadway Production

For Colored Girls had previously been scheduled to appear at the Circle in the Square Theatre on August 19, 2008 with an official Broadway opening of September 8, 2008. This version of the show was to be Directed by Shirley Jo Finney and choreographed by Hinton Battle. This production of the poetic 1970s play was produced by Whoopi Goldberg and DreamTeam Entertainment Group.

The show never opened and no information is known about the reasons why the show was cancelled so close to its opening date. The Circle in the Square Theatre was the perfect theatre for this show and Whoopi Goldberg's team will not discuss the matter.
