Just like the film from which it is based, Groundhog Day on Broadway is a musical that tells a similar story of a weatherman named Phil Connors who wakes up one day to realize that it is the same day as yesterday – that is, he is caught in an endless loop wherein he keeps living the same day over and over again.
What's Groundhog Day Like?
Groundhog Day is a new musical based on the 1993 film of the same name, which starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, and which was directed by Harold Ramis.
Frustrations mount as does the comedy, as Connors tries to get out of the vicious cycle. He finds it necessary to relent his deeply cynical attitude as he gets acquainted with the other residents in the small Pennsylvania town in the midst of a snow storm. This production is a thoroughly well designed piece of theatre, due to the pedigree of the creative team working on the show, as well as the fundamentally engaging story that is beloved by movie fans and hopeless romantics everywhere.
Is Groundhog Day Good for Kids?
Yes, the show is appropriate for children over the age of 8. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre, or indeed into any Broadway theatre.
Groundhog Day on Broadway Background
This musical has a book by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the screenplay along with Harold Ramis. The music and lyrics are by Tim Minchin, who was also the composer and lyricist behind the wildly successful musical adaptation of Matilda. The director is Matthew Warchus, and the choreographer is Peter Darling, both of whom are reuniting with Tim Minchin from the Matilda team. Matthew Warchus was also the director of God of Carnage and The Norman Conquests, and Peter Darling is the Tony Award winning choreographer of Billy Elliot. Groundhog Day was produced by Scott Rudin, until he dropped out of the show in early June 2016 - Whistle Pig Productions (led by Andre Ptaszynski) and Columbia Stage Live. Scott Rudin’s many recent hits include The Book of Mormon, Fish in the Dark, and Skylight, as well as the upcoming Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. Previews for Groundhog Day begin in March 2017 and official opening night is scheduled in April 2017.
