Indecent charts the journey of the artists who risked their lives to perform and produce God of Vengeance, holding true to their conviction despite hazardous and often outright dangerous circumstances. While the work is considered by some to be an important work of Jewish culture, it was also incredibly controversial at the time, with others labeling it traitorous and libel. Part of the reason Asch’s play was so incendiary was that it involved a lesbian relationship.
What's Indecent Like?
Indecent is a new play written by Paula Vogel, directed by Rebecca Taichman, and created by the Vogel and Taichman. Paula Vogel’s Indecent is a deeply moving portrayal of the events surrounding the production of an earlier play, Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance, which played Broadway in 1923. This play was ahead of its time, and now it is given a chance to share its message with modern audiences.
In addition to the skillful direction of Rebecca Taichman (Familiar, Stage Kiss), Indecent benefits from the beautiful musical composition of Aaron Halva and Lisa Gutkin, along with choreography by David Dorfman. As such, this is a “play with music,” sharing this story in a multidimensional and immensely moving production.
Is Indecent Good for Kids?
The show is most appropriate for those over the age of 12. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Indecent on Broadway Background
Paula Vogel has been a prolific playwright since the late 1970s, and she won the great honor of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1997 for her play How I Learned to Drive. Her other works include The Baltimore Waltz, which earned the Obie Award for Best Play in 1992, as well as The Oldest Profession, And Baby Makes Seven, and Desdemona. Despite this very substantial career, this production of Indecent marks the first time that a work of Paula Vogel’s has been given a Broadway production. It is also the first announced new play by a woman in the 2016 to 2017 season. Indecent premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre in October 2015, and it then played at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego in November 2015. The play’s New York premiere took place Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre from April to June 2016, before making its way to Broadway’s Cort Theatre. The Broadway production is produced by Daryl Roth, Elizabeth McCann, and Cody Lassen, with set design by Ricardo Hernandez, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, sound design by Matt Hubbs, and projection design by Tal Yarden.
