It Shoulda Been You is a charming and hilarious musical romp set during a wedding in which cultures collide. When two families are joined that have very different backgrounds, plots are made and secrets are revealed. The mix of religions of the parents-of-the-happy-couple in this Broadway musical result in a hysterical wedding-from-hell.
What's It Shoulda Been You Like?
While the theme is not exactly unique, as many romantic comedies include the dichotomy between parents and their children’s prospective bride or groom to be. The bride’s sister is held responsible for turning what could be a disaster into a heartwarming conclusion. The score has a number of charming songs that bring out the comedy in family conflict. On an interesting note, the show’s creative team includes a number of famous gay theatre couples, such as David Hyde Pierce (the director) and Brian Hargrove (the composer), as well as David Burtka (the bridegroom), who is the husband of Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch).
Is It Shoulda Been You Good for Kids?
The show may be inappropriate for children under the age of 10, due to themes of sexuality. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
It Shoulda Been You on Broadway Background
This delightful musical about a wedding in a mixed religion family, first premiered at the George Street Playhouse in 2011 and has now found its way to Broadway. Directed by David Hyde Pierce ("Frasier"), It Shoulda Been You stars Tyne Daly (Master Class) in the role of the matriarch Judy Steinberg, who is the Jewish mother of the bride. Harriet Harris (Cinderella) is the Protestant mother of the groom. The show also stars Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid, The Phantom of the Opera), and David Burtka (Gypsy). The show was conceived by Barbara Anselmi with book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, and additional lyrics by Jill Abramowitz. The show is choreographed by Noah Racey and music direction is by David Loud. Rife with interreligious jest, the dynamic of the parental in-laws and their deeply embedded xenophobic beliefs provides a story that many married couples could find relation to.
