The tale of a young straight-laced man who inherits his family’s struggling shoe factory, and ends up manufacturing “kinky” boots made for drag queens.
What's Kinky Boots Like?
Based off the 2005 British film of the same name, Kinky Boots is a flamboyantly fabulous musical with a book written by Harvey Fierstein (Newsies, La Cage aux Folles) and a score written by the singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper. With incredible choreography by Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots is an edge-of-your-seat, feel-good story about a man who learns to leave his comfort zone and embrace a whole new world of fabulous. Winner of the 2013 Tony Awards for Best Musical as well as Best Original Score, the production is a masterpiece of fun. The story may not be the most profound, but the experience of watching the show will leave a huge smile on your face and refresh your faith in humankind. In addition to the lead roles of Charlie and Lola, there is a fantastic comedic performance on the part of Lauren, a young woman who works in the factory and ends up falling in love with Charlie.
Is Kinky Boots Good for Kids?
According to the show’s producers, it is appropriate for children ages 10 and up. There are themes of sexuality and provocativeness that would be more suitable for older children. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre. This upbeat and entertaining musical leaves audiences feeling great. People have suggested that knowing the back story before you attend, will help defuse any confusion.
Kinky Boots on Broadway Background
The Kinky Boots movie (and the Broadway show) are based on the real life BBC documentary which followed Steve Pateman's struggle to keep his century old shoe factory alive. His company had been producing men's dress shoes for over fifty years in a small English village in Northampton, England. Like many other manufacturers in his county, his shoe sales were dwindling and staff redundancies beckoned. From a chance meeting, Divine Footwear was born. His decision to design "ladies" shoes that would hold a man's weight, kept the factory open and saved countless jobs. The factory adopted the moniker Kinky Boots and few years later Geoff Deane and Tim Firth wrote the movie script based on this story, but were able to keep much of the story intact.
For the adaptation of Kinky Boots for Broadway, the collaboration of Harvey Fierstein, a Tony winning theatre legend and Cyndi Lauper, a platinum selling Grammy winner, made the show an instant Broadway success.
