Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a sexy French drama set in the late 1780s, based on a novel written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The story is a viscerally captivating tale of mischievous royals who play sexual games to compromise the morals of innocent young women; to their dismay, these games ultimately end up getting played on themselves. The production is directed by Josie Rourke, the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse.

What's Les Liaisons Dangereuses Like?

The cast for this production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses is excellent. The lead male role of Le Vicomte de Valmont is played by Liev Schreiber, who won a Tony Award for his role in Glengarry Glen Ross, and has also appreared on Broadway in Betrayal, A View from the Bridge & Talk Radio. The lead female part of La Marquise de Merteuil is played by Janet McTeer, who also played the part in the Donmar production in London, and who has previously won a Tony Award for A Doll’s House in 1997; her additional Broadway credits include Mary Stuart and God of Carnage. The lighting design is by Mark Henderson and the sound design is by Carolyn Downing

Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Broadway Background

The English-language theatrical adaptation was written by Christopher Hampton, who is one of the leading dramatists working in the overlap between the French and English languages. Several of his translations of French-language plays have been performed on Broadway, including this season’s The Father by Florian Zeller, and God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. Les Liaisons Dangereuses premiered in 1985 produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, followed by a transfer production to London, then to a bigger West End theatre in London. The Broadway premiere took place in 1987, and it was then revived on Broadway in 2008, starring Ben Daniels and Laura Linney. Furthermore, the story was adapted in to a film released in 1998 starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich, for which Christopher Hampton won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. A modern adaptation of this story can also be seen in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. The present revival, which marks the 30-year anniversary of the premiere, is a transfer production from London’s prestigious venue, the Donmar Warehouse.
