Originally having premiered on Broadway in 1988, Love Letters is a two-hander written by A.R. Gurney. The play’s story spans 50 years, detailing the friendship of a man and a woman told exclusively through love letters.
What's Love Letters Like?
For the first several weeks of the run on Broadway, the play will star Brian Dennehy and Mia Farrow, and then a series of other major stars will rotate in the parts. There are only two characters, Melissa who struggles with her path as an artist, and Andrew who ends up as a U.S. Senator, but they always are just a letter away from their pen pal, who could be their true love.
Is Love Letters Good for Kids?
The show is most appropriate for children over the age of 10, as it involves adult themes and content. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Love Letters on Broadway Background
The play was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and its original Broadway production ran in 1989. This revival will be directed by Gregory Mosher (A View from the Bridge). This play has historically attracted major stars, due in part to the minimal demands on the actors who read from love letters. In this production, after Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy finish their runs, the cast will also include limited engagements by Candice Bergen, Alan Alda, Diana Rigg, Stacy Keach, Anjelica Huston, and Martin Sheen. The story traverses the course of 50 years, with the actors sitting side by side reading letters, notes, and cards in which they discuss their hopes and dreams, as well as victories and disappointments.
