On The Town is the story of three sailors during World War II who are on leave for 24-hours only in New York City. From the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Carnegie Hall, they sing and dance their way through some of the Big Apple’s most iconic locations, enjoying the sights, the sounds, and of course, the beautiful women.

What's On The Town Like?

After a fair amount of struggle in their search for love, all three sailors eventually find their perfect match. With a wonderful score of catchy and classic tunes, as well as archetypal Broadway choreography, the show is a light-hearted musical comedy sure to be fun for the whole family.The show includes such classic Broadway songs as “New York, New York,” “I Can Cook, Too,” and “Lonely Town.” On the Town was made into a 1949 film of the same concept, although all but three of the songs were re-written for the Hollywood movie project, which was a sad loss given the amazingly catchy Leonard Bernstein score.

Is On The Town Good for Kids?

This Broadway show does include themes that may be too mature for very young children, such as the idea of searching for love for one-day-only. Though the production has not yet announced their specific policies, the show is probably best for children over the age of 8 and adults of all ages.

On The Town on Broadway Background

With book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and a musical score by Leonard Bernstein, the show has enjoyed a slew of major revivals since its 1944 Broadway premiere. This is credit to the musical’s enduring quality, as though it may be considered dated by some, it is undoubtedly entertaining and its themes are still relevant today.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1944, On The Town has also been made into a major motion-picture in 1949, although the Hollywood production substituted many of the iconic songs from the original. After opening on September 20, 2014 the revival of On The Town recaptures the essence that made the original so successful. The audience is sure to be appeased by the nostalgic setting of 1940’s New York City, as three sailors in the midst of the war are allowed a reprieve from the rigors of sea-duty as they enjoy their night on the town.
