Based on the hit 2003 comedic film of the same name, School of Rock is a new musical produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
What's School of Rock Like?
School of Rock is a heartwarming and hilarious story about empowering children through rock n roll. It is the story of a goofy rock musician turned substitute teacher who bypasses all the conventional teaching methods to really get through to his students through the language of rock. The cult hit movie of the same name, focused on the lead character, played by Jack Black, but the Broadway musical makes the show more about the children and the challenges they face.
This is the first time since 1971 that a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber has premiered on Broadway, rather than in the United Kingdom (the last time was Jesus Christ Superstar, another rock musical). Though the story is based firmly on the film, this adaptation highlights more the stories of the children rather than the adults.
Is School of Rock Good for Kids?
Yes, this show is a great musical treat for children! However, children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
School of Rock on Broadway Background
The musical score encompasses some songs from the original film, as well as additional tunes with music by Webber, and lyrics by Glenn Slater (Sister Act). The book for the musical is written by Julian Fellowes, who created the TV series “Downton Abbey.”
Alex Brightman (Matilda, Glory Days, Big Fish, Wicked) played the rock-obsessed Dewey Finn when the musical first opened December 6, 2015. The Broadway show School Of Rock began performances in November 2015 at the Winter Garden Theatre, where Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats ran for 18 years and where the highly acclaimed Rocky finished its run in August 2015.
Grammy nominated music producer, Rob Cavallo (worked with Dave Matthews Band, Green Day, Phil Collins and Kid Rock) also contributes his creative talents to the show.
The show is directed by Laurence Connor (recent revival of Les Misérables) and choreographed by JoAnn M. Hunter
