Taking place in the 1590s during the period of England’s renaissance, Something Rotten! is the story of the Bottom brothers (Nick and Nigel) who are trying to write a stage masterpiece in order to ensure the survival of their theatre; however, the two are hindered in their quest by living in the shadow of “the Bard” (aka William Shakespeare).
What's Something Rotten! Like?
Something Rotten is a new musical from the book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. When the Bottom Brothers encounter a local soothsayer (Nostradamus) who predicts that the two will create a piece that will involve singing, acting, and dancing all at once, they set out to write the first musical of all time. They are determined to overcome the perennial thorn in their side that is William Shakespeare.
This musical is heralded as one of the most genuinely funny musicals Broadway has to offer. The scores, setting, acting and scenery all combine to make Something Rotten a truly fun and unique experience that brings audience members back for more. In any case, the show is uproarious and hilarious ode to the genre of musical theatre that we all know and love.
Is Something Rotten! Good for Kids?
The show may be inappropriate for children under the age of 8. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Something Rotten! on Broadway Background
The show stars Christian Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher) as Shakespeare and Brian D’Arcy James (Shrek, Sweet Smell of Success) as Nick Bottom. Songs like "A Musical" poke fun at the many classic songs performed on Broadway so far and "Right Hand Man" gives actress Heidi Blickenstaff (playing Bea) a chance to belt out her feminism to her husband (played by Brian D'Arcy). Produced by Kevin McCollum (In the Heights, Avenue Q, Rent), the show received an October 2014 workshop with a cast of Broadway stars including John Cariani (Fiddler on the Roof), Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone), Brad Oscar (The Producers), Kate Reinders (Gypsy), Gerry Vichi (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Allen Fitzpatrick (Memphis). The music and lyrics are by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick. The show is directed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).
