Sweat is a vastly important work for American society today. Taking place at the turn of the 21st century, this play is set in Pennsylvania and explores the themes of industrial decline. The main employer in the town in which the play takes place is a factory, and when talk of layoffs begins to spread, the previously close bonds and friendships of the employees begin to erode, as they find themselves pitted against one another.
What's Sweat Like?
Sweat is the newest play by highly celebrated contemporary playwright Lynn Nottage, whose previous works include Ruined, Intimate Apparel, and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark. Nottage’s works have been performed widely across the nation and the world, but Sweat will be her Broadway debut.
When the show opened at the Public Theater, it received rave reviews to sell-out houses, and extended three times. With such a ravenous response, it is a delightful turn of events for this show to transfer to Broadway, where it will be able to reach a wider audience. The play also won the prestigious Susan Blackburn Prize in 2016. In terms of its themes and style, this play is unique in the current Broadway landscape, which makes it all the more enticing of a show to see this season.
Is Sweat Good for Kids?
Sweat is most appropriate for well-prepared high school students and adults. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Sweat on Broadway Background
Nottage is also a professor of play-writing at Columbia and Yale. Reuniting Nottage with her directing collaborator on Ruined and other works, Sweat is directed by Kate Whoriskey, whose one previous Broadway directing credit is the 2010 production of The Glass Menagerie. Sweat had its world premiere at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon in July 2015, followed by a regional production at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. in January 2016. The play’s New York debut was at the highly acclaimed Public Theater, a well-known Off-Broadway theatre institution that has become a bona fide breeding ground for Broadway works of quality, including Hamilton, Fun Home, and Eclipsed. Sweat transfers intact from the Public Theater to Broadway’s Studio 54 theatre, with the cast including Will Pullen, Carlo Albán, Khris Davis, James Colby, Johanna Day, Michelle Wilson, John Earl Jelks, and Lance Coadie Williams. The Broadway production is produced by Stuart Thompson (Six Degrees of Separation, The Present, King Charles III, Skylight), along with Louise Gund.
