The Father follows Andre, an 88 year-old man who is showing the first signs of a degenerative mental disorder. His daughter Anne is preoccupied with her inheritance. As he loses the ability to take control over his life, Anne even gains power over his final will and testament. This is a shocking and poignant portrayal of intimate human issues, causing the viewer to conflate the real and the imaginary as we witness the rational mind fade into the past.

What's The Father Like?

The Father is a play by Florian Zeller, a French writer whose other plays include L’Autre, Le Manège, and La Vérité. Originally published under the French name Le Père, this play was translated by Christopher Hampton and has so far had successful runs in the United Kingdom, first in Bath and later at the Tricycle Theatre in London. The Father received excellent reviews in its U.K. productions, and it will surely make a huge splash on Broadway. With an incredible lead performance by three time Tony Award winner Frank Langella, this production will surely match or even outshine the success of the London runs. The Telegraph paper in London described this play as one of the most acute and absorbing portraits of dementia that writer had ever seen.

Yes, this show is most appropriate for children over the age of 9. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

The Father on Broadway Background

Coming to Broadway with previews beginning in March 2016, The Father is by Manhattan Theatre Club at the non-profit’s Broadway venue, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. A West End run is also planned for later this year.

The play will star Frank Langella, the highly acclaimed actor whose other Broadway roles have included the shows Man and Boy, A Man for All Seasons, Frost/Nixon (for which he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role), Match, and Fortune’s Fool. The show is directed by Doug Hughes, who also helmed A Man for All Seasons starring Frank Langella. Hughes’ other Broadway directing credits include The Big Knife, Outside Mullingar, An Enemy of the People, andi, among many others. Florian Zeller won the prestigious Molière Award for new plays for The Father. The translator, Christopher Hampton, has also translated many plays by Yasmina Reza, and he also wrote Les Liaisons Dangereuses among other works.
