The Front Page is a classic comedy about a newspaper reporter and editor who end up hiding an escaped prisoner for the sake of scoring a story. The Front Page has not been seen on Broadway for 30 years. The fast-paced dialogue and relatable setting have allowed the play to stand the test of time. This show stars an extraordinary cast made up of Nathan Lane (It’s Only a Play, The Producers), John Slattery (“Mad Men,” "Rabbit Hole"), John Goodman (“Roseanne,” Waiting for Godot), Jefferson Mays (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, I Am My Own Wife), Rosemary Harris (The Road to Mecca, The Royal Family), & Sherie Rene Scott (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Everyday Rapture).

The creative team is one of the most experienced and respected on Broadway, and director Jack O’Brien has collaborated with lead actor Nathan Lane several times in the past, including Lane’s last two Broadway outings: It’s Only a Play & The Nance. Producer Scott Rudin is known for putting together the most splendid pairing of quality material with an incredibly talented cast & creative team. The Front Page is a classic of American theatre that has been delighting audiences for nearly a century.

The Front Page on Broadway Background

Written by Chicago reporters turned entertainers Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, the play first premiered on Broadway in 1928 starring Osgood Perkins and Lee Tracy, and was declared an immediate hit. It ran for 278 performances, which was an exceedingly long run at the time, and was widely considered one of the best plays of the period. It has since been revived on Broadway four times, with this present revival being the fifth. In 1946, the lead roles were played by Arnold Moss and Lew Parker. In May 1969, Robert Ryan and Bert Convy took up the challenge, and then the duo returned for an additional revival from October 1969 to February 1970. Most recently, Lincoln Center revived the play in 1986, starring John Lithgow and Richard Thomas. It has also been adapted into several films. The 2016 revival is directed by Jack O’Brien (whose extensive directorial credits include It’s Only a Play, Macbeth, The Nance, Hairspray, and The Coast of Utopia), and produced by Scott Rudin (whose other credits this spring season alone include Shuffle Along…, The Crucible, Blackbird, The Humans, and The Book of Mormon).
