What's The Pirates Of Penzance Like?
The Pirates of Penzance is a comic operetta written in two acts with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libretto by W.S. Gilbert.
The story is set during the reign of Queen Victoria and follows the adventures of Frederic, a young man who has just completed his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets the daughters of Major-General Stanley, including Mabel, and the two young people fall instantly in love. However, Frederic’s sense of duty to the pirates and his sense of honor compels him to leave Mabel and return to the pirates.
The rest of the story follows the pirates’ attempts to capture the Major-General’s daughters and the police’s attempts to capture the pirates. The operetta is known for its witty and fast-paced dialogue, as well as its catchy tunes and memorable characters.
The show premiered in Paignton, England, on December 30, 1879, and in New York City on December 31, 1879.
