The Theatre at Madison Square Garden History

Part of the mammoth Madison Square Garden complex, the Theater at Madison Square Garden is an appropriately enormous space, far larger than any Broadway theater. Its size makes it ideal for concerts and popular annual family shows like A Christmas Carol and Peter Pan.

The theatre was originally know as the Felt Theatre and later became The Paramount Theatre and The Hulu Theater before being renamed The Theatre at Madison Square Garden.

The Theater at MSG, has been used for musical acts and others shows including comedy acts, awards shows, and even boxing matches.

On this site, Madison Square Garden opened in 1968 with a ceremony hosted by Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, is actually the fourth arena to bear the MSG name.

The first and second incarnations were located in and named for New York City's Madison Square Park and opened in 1879.

History of Its Names

Since its opening in 1968 The Theater at Madison Square Garden has gone by many names.

The theater was first known as the Felt Forum, named after then-president Irving Mitchell Felt. Paramount Communications later owned the venue in the early 1990s, and renamed it the Paramount Theater.

In 1997, Paramount was bought by Viacom and sold its Madison Square Garden Properties. The theater would simply be called The Theater at Madison Square Garden until 2007, when its naming rights were sold to Washington Mutualand renamed it the WaMu Theater.

Washington Mutual's Collapse 2009

Following Washington Mutual's collapse in 2009, the name was reverted back to The Theater at Madison Square Garden. It then became known as the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, after Hulu signed a deal with the theater in 2018.

The Theatre at Madison Square Garden Design

Madison Square Garden is between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue, stretching from 31st to 33rd Street.

It encompasses the huge Arena that New York sports teams like the Knicks and the Rangers call home (and that features spectacular concert performances by major artists like Elton John and U2), the Expo Center, a terrace, and the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

'The Garden', as it is usually referred to by local sports fans, was built over the always-busy Penn Station, so the area gets quite congested on game nights.
